China's Global Times and TRT World Accounts Briefly Banned in India

On May 14, 2025, India temporarily blocked the X (formerly Twitter) accounts of China's state-run media outlet Global Times and Turkish state broadcaster TRT World. The suspension was due to concerns over the dissemination of misinformation related to the Indian armed forces and Operation Sindoor, a military operation against Pakistan. The accounts were restored after a few hours, following a legal request. (The Times of India, mint)

The Indian government took action against these media outlets after forensic reports linked Turkish-origin drones used by Pakistan to breach Indian airspace. The suspension of TRT World's account came shortly after India blocked content from China's Global Times, both moves aimed at curbing the spread of misinformation. (The Times of India)

This incident highlights ongoing concerns about the spread of false information on social media platforms, particularly in contexts involving sensitive international and military matters. The brief suspension of these accounts underscores the challenges platforms face in balancing freedom of expression with the need to prevent the spread of harmful misinformation.(The Times of India)
